The caption in Gaelic reads: “Gui, Fan, Iontaobhas” which translates in English as “Pray, Wait, Trust.

The word “angel” when translated from its Latin origin angelus means “messenger of God.” Many of us feel the presence of angels in our daily lives! In this representation of Saint Matthew from the Book of Kells, arguably the world’s most famous medieval manuscript, Saint Matthew, author of the first gospel account is symbolized by a winged man, or is it an angel? The colors chosen for this detailed design include vibrant reds, blues and greens, similar to those sourced by the creators of the Book of Kells from the natural world around them. The design is embellished with gold and bronze detail throughout, adding a richness in keeping with Christian Celtic manuscript artwork of the Middle Ages.

Historical Significance of Design Elements Used:

Following the death of Christ, there were numerous accounts of his life written, but only four became accepted as authentic by the Christian Church. These were the gospels written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The gospel of Saint Matthew is said to represent Jesus’ “incarnation” and so reflects Christ’s “human nature.” In his assessment of the Book of Kells, Gerald of Wales in the 12th century A.D. wrote: “Look more keenly at it and you will penetrate to the very shrine of art. You will make out intricacies, so delicate and so subtle, so full of knots and links, with colors so fresh and vivid, that you might say that all this were the work of an angel, and not of a man.”

    Quality and Details:

    Dimensions: 12″x16″ (30 cm x 41 cm)
Paper: High quality 300 gsm card stock.
Ink: Epson archival professional ink for colorful, vibrant prints that are water & fade-resistant.
Frame: This beautifully crafted modern wood frame plus mount and backing board are manufactured in Cork, Ireland. Each 1″ (2.5 cm) solid wood frame is hand finished, the mount is lignin-free, alkaline-sized and pH neutral. 2mm Acrylic glass is used, more expensive than conventional glass, it is lightweight and shatter resistant eliminating the potential for damage during transportation. Acrylic does not discolor and is optically superior to glass. The back of the frame has a mount ready for hanging.

The appearance of colors may vary between different computer screens, (actual printed colors are more vibrant).
